Shabu Studios Anti-Harassment Policy

Shabu Studios is dedicated to providing an inclusive environment free from harassment for everyone, regardless of race, color, religion, age, gender, gender expression or identity, sexual orientation, disability, citizenship status, or place of origin. We do not tolerate harassment in any manner. Anyone renting the studio and/or attending events and activities must follow these policies.

Harassment is any activity or behavior that makes others feel uncomfortable, unwelcome, or unsafe. These include, but are not limited to: unwanted touch, sexual advances, remarks, jokes, or threats. Harassment does not require malicious intent; the impacts on the person reporting the harassment must be addressed regardless of intent. Behavior that, in the opinion of the reporting individual, impairs their ability to safely participate in the Shabu Studios community is included in this definition of harassment. This policy applies to all those present at Shabu Studios. Anyone who is asked to stop harassing behavior must comply immediately.

Based on the seriousness and type of harassment, Shabu Studios may take any of the following actions: warning the harasser, temporarily suspending the harasser from all Shabu Studios events, permanently excluding the harasser from all Shabu Studios events, or contacting the Portland Police. Shabu Studios will assist any authority investigating harassment incidents occurring at Shabu Studios.

If someone is accused of a serious offense such as rape or physical assault on or off the premises, that person will not be permitted on the premises pending the resolution of any legal case. Shabu Studios will not judge guilt or innocence in these cases but will err on the side of caution and safety.

If you feel that you have been harassed, and are unable to resolve the situation yourself or with the independent teacher/organizer/photographer renting the studio, contact Shabu Studios at shannon@shabustudios.com. Your report will be kept confidential unless or until you specify otherwise or unless we are required to report such incidents by law.

The following examples of harassment are intended to be guidelines and are not exclusive when determining whether there has been a violation of this policy:

  • Sexual harassment includes unsolicited and unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.

  • Verbal harassment includes comments that are offensive or unwelcome. Examples include, but are not limited to, remarks regarding a person’s race, national origin, color, religion, gender, gender presentation, sexual orientation, age, body, disability or appearance, including epithets, slurs and stereotyping; threats of violence; aggressive or combative interactions.

  • Nonverbal harassment includes distribution, display or discussion of any written or graphic material that ridicules, denigrates, insults, belittles or shows hostility, aversion or disrespect toward an individual or group because of race, color, religion, age, gender, gender expression or identity, sexual orientation, appearance, disability, citizenship status, or place of origin.

This policy may be adjusted and changed as needed.
